An Ever Growing Family !

As the communion season is almost at its end, this week it is our church that has the joy of gathering together to remember the immense sacrifice that was made for us. It has just been such an incredible and immeasurable joy to hear about,  and also to talk to the latest members of the church of Christ. This multi-denominational , multi-cultural and mixed group of miraculously saved sinners , some joined by no connection other than their shared love of the Lord that saved them.
It is to group of people that we welcome all the latest communicant members of the many churches in this island.

If you are one of those new members of the family then welcome , you are now part of an eternal family that will always love you , because it is a family that is eternally loved by the Lord Jesus Christ.
We should be mindful and extra considerate for any new brothers and sisters in Christ that we know of.

Although God does save and sanctify the sinner , as the church it is placed in our hands to ” make disciples” we must be willing to help and assist the new Christian  in any way we can.
In Galatians 6 and verse 2  we are presented with a practical way of serving our brother and sisters in Christ :
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
The new church member will doubtless be faced with many burdens and fears as they start their public walk with God ( I know I was anyway). Off course not all new members are new Christians but many are.

The new Christian and new member are just newborns to the gospel, they are starting off into a  world that is new to them , but also into a world that is in the most part opposed to what they now are.
Fears of lack of knowledge, lack of faith, fears about witnessing, worries of lack of assurance … and many more things still appear in the daily walk of many older Christians , and these things  affect old and new Christians alike.

So this command to bear each others burdens should be something that we try and do daily. As Christians we should be willing to help any brother or sister that may be carrying an especially heavy burden or fear.
We must be careful though in doing this not to let the burden burden us also ,  yes we must carry on anothers burdens , but carry them to God not drag them around behind us. We should be continually intercessing  and bringing before God in prayer each others burdens ,worries and concerns.

These new members are now part of our family and we should love them like we love our own earthly family.

But if you are reading this as a new member and a new Christian then you cant keep these heavy burdens and fears to yourself. Take them first to God , then to a member of your new and loving family.
No worry or fear is ever to small to pray and to talk about. Jesus cares about anything that upsets his brothers and sisters.

“The church is the gathering of God’s children, where they can be helped and fed like babies and then guided by her motherly care, grow up to manhood in maturity of faith.”
– John Calvin
